I've spread the word! It always makes me happy to see fandom doing something positive.

Wait. WHUT?? We as fandom are raising money to spread awareness about ZIKA? I almost just spat my tea all over the keyboard.

When I was on Velociraptor Island, we had dengue fever and chikungunya, both of which have crossed over to the US, I believe. Both mosquito-borne. Both are very serious diseases in a minority of cases. I remember seeing in the ER one colorful case of a full blown panic attack in a student who saw some bumps on his arm and decided it was chikungunya. They're certainly unpleasant. But the vast majority of patients will not bleed from their eyeballs and die. All the prevention methods the comm is listing is awfully familiar from the island.

This is SUCH bullshit. This is another one of those "zombie plagues" that sweeps the globe every year, if the media is to be believed. I'm sure somebody somewhere has died from it and somebody else had a baby with microcephaly. I bet a lot more people had babies with microcephaly from rubella, toxoplasma and CMV. Most people who contract it, though, will probably have some fever and body aches and will complain that their flu shot gave them the flu.

I think I'm gonna barf while the fandom goes through the cycle of "raising awareness" and patting themselves on the back for being so on top of it and shit. Barf - not because zika isn't real. It is. Just, for fuck's sake, we have nothing better to campaign about? Of all the diseases, of all the problems in healthcare, zika? This is why I fucking hate the media.

I don't know diddly about Zika, to be honest, except what the news reports and how it's effecting the Olympics--some athletes are apparently opting not to go because of the virus--but a friend is running this campaign and really, it's harmless to raise a little money to help squash a bug. You sassy today! ;) (But I totally respect your experiences with these sorts of things. Leveraging a fandom's charitable tendencies to help, in some small way, countries whose medical systems ain't all that great isn't an awful thing, yeah?)
Chill McGun: hippie chickdear_tiger on June 29th, 2016 02:40 pm (UTC)
It is harmless, yes! So I'm going to go formulate my objections to this nonsense into a post and not wave my flag all over your comment thread :D
