'Cold Water' - SPN art, naturally!
Title: 'Cold Water'
Characters: Sam and Dean
Rating: G
Medium: black ink on watercolor paper, colored digitally
Notes: A quickie based on lamapan's prompt cold water and gifted to the marvelous de_nugis

And as a little bonus, I thought it might be interesting to add the original ink doodle, before I tweaked it all to hell in PS7.

And photorefs courtesy of my long-suffering sons, via my phone. I really need a proper camera some day...

Feel free to lob any questions my way!

Oh my god, your boys are cute, LoL, that they get up stuff like that is awesome. Second, oh my GOD that is a great picture, story in art that tells all and makes you want more.
I know it's not really really the end of November, but can I remind you now???
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 22nd, 2012 08:52 pm (UTC)
Heh...go ahead and send me the scene you want me to doodle (thought I think I remember the one) and I'll put it on my calendar... :D

Do you like this medium? Would that work for the image?

Aww boys!! Natural born actors, clearly ; )

It's weird- in the original sketch I feel like they look further apart, but that isn't true is it? One of them there optical illusions?

I love the desperation in this one — you know it's just a second before Dean pulls out a giant hammer (or grabs a big rock) and breaks open the ice. Very cool!
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 22nd, 2012 08:55 pm (UTC)
The second son is, for sure!

I just overlayed the two images to see if I'd actually moved the figures around at some point and nope, exactly the same positions. Interesting!

Thank you, m'dear!
lamapanlamapan on November 22nd, 2012 09:45 pm (UTC)
Oh yay, we finally get to see it! :D And waah that is cold!! It's painful just to watch it, poor Sam! So dramatic and powerful ! (And how cool to have people around willing to pose for you! :)
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 22nd, 2012 09:57 pm (UTC)
I'm still struggling with staging scenes, but thank you, lovey! (Yeah, my boys finally hit some growth spurts and can almost double as men. I doubt that either of them will get as tall as Jared, though, heh!)
harriganharrigan on November 22nd, 2012 09:59 pm (UTC)
I *love* that you shared the prep stages - what a hoot!
Awesome pic too!

The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 22nd, 2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
Sharing the stages is a neat thing to do. I love seeing the progress of a piece; it makes things look doable, and you can see how much work actually goes into what might seem so simple. It rarely is simple, truthfully. But if it weren't fun or rewarding in some way, we wouldn't do it, huh? Thanks, bb!
becc_jbecc_j on November 22nd, 2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
This is brilliant Q! Thank you for sharing the ink piece and your refs as well. Your boys are awesome :) and I love that ink version. The colour version is just gorgeous, especially the colours for Jared's face and his expression. I love the drama, with the ice cracking under Dean. <3
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 22nd, 2012 11:07 pm (UTC)
Aw, thanks, Becc! I dunno about brilliant; full-blown scenes are still a struggle but I'm glad I could make use of the art after all. :D As fun as the malleability of digital is, there's something really comfy and warm about traditional media. (I just bought better watercolor paper so I hope to paint more!)

What I love the most is that your kids did this for you XD. That is awesome.
Also love the colors and all, and this gives me nightmares x_x oh god no.
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 22nd, 2012 11:18 pm (UTC)
My husband is too 'stocky' for me to use! (He's a little more Cupid-shaped...heh.) The boys are real troopers. Thank you!
vicious_sockvicious_sock on November 22nd, 2012 11:13 pm (UTC)
Oh my god! you have your kids pose for you! that's just beyond adorable! :DDDD

Your art is awesome as always! :D <33
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 22nd, 2012 11:56 pm (UTC)
It's the LEAST they can do for all the crap I went through, being preggers with the little yard apes. ;)

Thank ya, sunshine!
Allison Mammo on November 23rd, 2012 01:25 am (UTC)
Awww yessss, this is sweet! It's so nice to have a handy model (or models). Every now and then I ask hubby to pose for me, and he just kind of goes "ohgodwhatnow..." They look like they're getting into their roles!

Anyhoo, I like how the original ink piece has a bleakness to it. Well done, hun!
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 23rd, 2012 01:31 am (UTC)
I'm lucky I managed to pop out a mess o' boys. Your poor hubby...(mine is too, um, stout to be of much use, I'm afraid!)

Yanno, I almost left it uncolored. I think I got a little carried away with the saturation when I digitally tweaked the thing. Next time I'll take a stab at working overtop the ink with watercolors and see what happens...might keep it a little less HEY LOOK COLOR. IfyouknowwhatImean. ;)

Thanks, babe!

This is great! Poor Sam! I especially like the starkness of the b/w version and the bonus sons.
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 23rd, 2012 03:58 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I like the b&w version too; it just doesn't look great IRL and I smeared digital make-up all over it. ;) Might not've been the ideal notion...
Rachel: Samraeve on November 23rd, 2012 04:35 am (UTC)
Gorgeous drawing! *u* I like both versions for different reasons. I like the coloured version for the ice-y quality of that bluish-grey you used, and then I like the ink version for it's bleakness.

Did I read somewhere in the comments that you are doing sequentials?! *excite* If you are, I can't wait to see them!!!

Your boys are too adorbs! <3
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 23rd, 2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
Yes! monicawoe and I are going to work on a small sequential (mini-graphic novel?) based on one of her short stories. She's already paged it out; now I have to just draw the derned thing! I keep getting distracted by other junk, but I'm really excited about it, and getting better in the drawing department. I may hunt you down for helpful hints!

The moment you capture here is terrifying!

And I love how you utilized your kids :D
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 23rd, 2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
Hey, the kids OWE me! ;)
ash48: OMGash48 on November 23rd, 2012 04:56 am (UTC)
OMG...I'm not sure which is more awesome the actual art work or your boys posing for it!

I absolutely love the art. The ice cracking where Dean is placed feels so threatening. And poor Sammy. I hope Dean can get to him...*meep*

And your boys are great sports for posing for you. I love it! In winter jackets and all..<33
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 23rd, 2012 04:02 pm (UTC)
They are great sports! Neither of them will make it to 6' 4", though...heh...

Thank you, sunshine!
cassiopeia7: Dean&Sam: Brotherscassiopeia7 on November 23rd, 2012 05:05 am (UTC)
Awesome! And . . . terrifying. Not only did you nail the tension, the danger, and the sensation of terrified, panicky action (the ice cracking beneath Dean's hand, Sam's face and those air bubbles), you also nailed a huge phobia of mine. Just . . . yikes.

FANTASTIC job! Did you do it all with brushes?

Also: Your boys are adorable and very helpful indeed to Mom. And Son Number Two must be a Grade-A Ham. XD
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on November 23rd, 2012 04:23 pm (UTC)
It's a huge phobia of mine too. Trapped and drowning, yeah, not Happy Fun Times!

I did the painting itself (over a pencil sketch) with two different brushes: a #10 round and a big #8 filbert for washes, but that's it. No pen work.

The whole family tends towards hammishness! (You've met me...) :D

Really like the tension and dynamism here. And of course watercolor always wins my heart.
