Little watercolor for In Small Packages
Someone over at insmallpackages wanted an SPN watercolor, so I done gone did it. First time with real watercolor paper and actual colors. Still had to finesse it with Photoshop because we can never be happy. This is a very unforgiving medium.

Ooo, SO pretty! Freckles!! And such depth in his eyes, too. &hearts

. . . is that a One Perfect Tear threatening to spill over? ;)

I had to add the freckles in PS; I FORGOT THEM. *gasp*

That's lovely. I'm always a big fan of shadow faced Dean (or Sam or anyone, I just think it's a fantastic effect), and this one is gorgeous. That desolate expression in those gorgeous eyes is perfect and, of course, there are the freckles.

I've still got a long way to go in wrangling this medium but it's always an adventure to try! Thanks!

Oh. My God. This is so gorgeous, I don't even know what to say. Thank you, you've just... fixed my day, entirely. <3

Oh, cool, this was YOUR wish? \0/! It's super-A1-awesome when a picture can brighten a day; that's one of the big reasons we get into this biz. Happy holidays, lady. *smish*

What I love best about this is the white highlighting, especially where it looks like he's somewhat backlit, and the tips of his hair and ear and jacket are .. you know, highlighted :) And I love his eyebrows and the depth of his eyes.
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on December 21st, 2012 02:35 am (UTC)
Thanks, BB! I'm not super-happy with it, but I'll figure out watercolors yet. (The original was really...hmm...puddle-y? For lack of a better descriptor.) I'm a big fan of rimlighting; it's a sort-of cheat to pop your figure from the background but it also adds sparkle. And we all need more sparkle! :D

I *love* watercolor! You really do it justice!
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on December 21st, 2012 03:34 am (UTC)
Nah, I don't. Truly. But there's something really satisfying about working (mostly) traditional. :D

Oh man, his eyes. Beautiful. Also, as a non-artist, I'm very impressed by your ability to control watercolor - whenever I try it (which is not often and usually with kids), it all just runs together into a blob, haha. This, though - even his ear is wonderful, and I can't say I've ever had the occasion to think about Dean's ears before.

Thinking some more about watercolor: I've been reading a lot about how the super high def/high frame version of The Hobbit takes the magic right out of it, and it made me realize why I appreciate art like this - it's just the right amount of imprecise. Very dreamlike. Very nice.

Honestly, it helps to use actual watercolor paper. I've tried painting on other stuff and the water just runs all over the surface, hence mud. :D

"Right amount of imprecise". THIS is why I love watercolors, and am determined to get better with the stuff. (I've heard the same complaint of The Hobbit from several people.)

Thank you! And happy holidays.

Every part of this is gorgeous - you did such fabulous with it. Watercolor is so funny because it looks like it should be easy, but as far as I'm concerned, it's by far the most difficult type of painting. It requires basically the exact opposite mentality of acrylics and oils.

So while I agree it's an unforgiving media, what I can't believe is that this was your first time doing it. You can just totally kick the butt of any media - absolutely amazing!

YES. With other paints, I don't have to worry about mistakes; I can go back over an area ad nauseum until I get what I want. But with watercolors? You gotta take what you get, to a far greater degree. It does go faster, though, and you can't get stuck tweaking and finessing things until the painting is lifeless. This is a HUGE attraction with watercolors! It's truly human.

Have a great holiday, lady, to you and all your adorable critters!

Love the watercolor effect, very ethereal image!

I love the happy accidents you get with watercolors, but boy, it can be frustrating to control the stuff. Thanks, Mama! Have a lovely holiday...

Beautiful. I really like how his face is half in shadow. I just want to reach out and grab him up into a hug.

ME TOO! Thanks for the kind words. (*sigh* Clearly I'm running behind in my art stuffs again. You WILL get your commission, T. I haven't forgotten; I'm just the Queen of the Land of Disorganization. :( ) Have a great holiday, lady!

DEEAAAAN :D Yay, this was my wish! I love it, I really like the colorscheme you picked and how delicate the washes look and his little freckled nose with its highlight.
How big is this, it looks small but then your signature would be tiny? /curious

Thank you! ♥
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on December 21st, 2012 05:05 pm (UTC)
Hee! Well, shoot, if I'd known it was you I'd have tied him up or bloodied him a bit. :D

Truth? I forgot the freckles at first and had to add them in digitally. I still need to pick up some frisket to preserve my whites so the highlights were done digitally too. Here's a scan of what the painting really looks like in its actual size: CLICK. The painted portion itself measures roughly 5" x 6.25", so fairly big for just a face. My paper is pretty toothy, though, and I'm not sure I'm crazy about the way the texture scans. I might flip it over next time and paint on the smooth side.

I'm so glad you like it! Your watercolor portraits are killer and this medium in NOT EASY. I look at what you and lamapan do and I start to get that jealous little flutter. I want to steal all the paintings.
