Question!
Why is so much fanfic written in the present tense? Just wondering...

It streams smoother that way. Also I like your new layout.

Thanks!

(The blue might be a bit, um, overly cheerful for SPN but I needed an injection of spring and my old layout reminded me of Geocities. :D)

I don't know, but it drives me a little crazy...

I used to have a deathly fear of the present tense until this fandom - I still include 'written in present-tense' in my story warnings - but when done well, it leaves a greater impact: emotionally and otherwise.

I totally dig that, because the present tense thing still gives me pause...

Ha! l love that you asked this!

Being a n00b to fic writing I can tell you that from one fic to the next I still shift back and forth between past and present depending on how the mood strikes me, however - present tense to me feels way more natural and way more active- because things are happening now! (as opposed to having happened already which is just so yesterday, or something).

Yes I know that was immensely helpful ; )

Also, just FYI- your art for Theosis still makes me do this

Hey, I LOVE being inspired, so thankya in return! And thanks for the 'tenses' input. Not sure I'll write in the present unless the story demands it, but I can certainly see how it would fit under some circumstances!

Fanfiction best practices vary from fandom to fandom. There really isn't a rhyme or reason as to why certain formatting/stylistic trends take hold that I've been able to ascertain.

Interesting! Since I only do SPN, I don't have the multi-fandom experience. Huh.

It's lazy.

Present tense works brilliantly for stories that need immediacy: porn is a good example. I've also seen it used very effectively as a characterisation thing (such as Faith Hunter's skinwalker novels where Beast's POV is always in present tense: it shows that Beast doesn't think or reason the way a human does). But in fanworks, the habit bleeds over into longer, plotty stories that would be far better in regular past tense.

Makes me crazy how many really great fics are spoiled by tense...

because the porn wants it to be so.

and b/c some betas suck at tense other than pointing out when there's a big change. //what? who? um, look over there!//
