A Deliberate Life, for Oh Sam
Okay, this started as a simple little ohsam fill for the birthday meme, prompted by de_nugis: "Mentally or emotionally distressed Sam (I prefer current era, or at any rate later seasons) finds a pond with a heron. Watching the heron is soothing for him. He goes back every day. Just him and the heron and the weather..."

Was very much reminded of Walden.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. ~Henry David Thoreau

OOOH, pretty. I was, secretly, hoping that you'd fill this prompt the moment I saw it. That heron is lovely. The whole shadow-and-silhouette thing is lovely. The 'live deep and suck out all the marrow of life' is one of my favorite quotes, and the correlation does pack a punch. This is beautiful, as the tiny moon up there with the clouds is beautiful. Happy birthday indeed. ♥

Aw, thank you, lovely! The more I got reading Walden (and Thoreau), the more sense it made when considering Sam. :D
de_nugisde_nugis on May 3rd, 2014 06:09 pm (UTC)
That is so utterly gorgeous. I had no idea I would get such amazing responses to my strange desire to have Sam contemplate wading birds. I just want to stare at them, the way Sam stares at herons.

I find that sometimes the simplest, most innocuous prompts are the tastiest. Bigger isn't always better. And this was so original, so quietly sad of an idea, it sang to me. Glad you like!

Wow, I dig the peaceful clarity of this scene. you can almost hear the waves washing against the shore. And the elements are just perfect: Sam's silhouette; the heron's reflection on the water; the mist further out; the golden sunset sky; and . . . is that Venus up there? :) Magnificent!

The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 06:37 pm (UTC)
YES! Venus! It was originally lower on the horizon but it wasn't showing up as brightly as I wanted, so I bent the universe to my whims. :D

I loved this prompt. It was so gentle and evocative. I didn't want to do something blame-y or too contentious, what with Season Nine and all. *cough*

Annnnyways, thank you!

Perfick!
I started trying to paint this but ick. I wanted a watercolour but have no idea where to start digitally so I gave up. Strangely, my composition had Sam and the heron in very similar positions. I'd show you but I've lost the file!
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 06:41 pm (UTC)
Salty would've totally ROCKED this but alas, she has left us. So I threw a watercolor texture over the whole shebang and called it a day! :)

Aw, damn, this is beautiful ♥
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 07:21 pm (UTC)
It came out a little darker than I'd intended, contrast-wise, but I think it's because I started it last night when it was dark outside and finished this morning in the blinding sun! But thank ya, bb. :D

Such a beautiful piece of art for such a beautiful and poignant prompt.

I love the warm colours and soft mist on the water. There's real sense of isolation and melancholia with Sam's silhouette and the solitary heron. This is so beautiful in it's quietness.
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 07:22 pm (UTC)
And THAT was a gorgeous comment. You totally flatter me. ♥

How do you work so FAST i love this orange/brown twilight, reminds me of upstate New York
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 07:26 pm (UTC)
I actually started it last night and finished this morning, so not quite as fast as it would seem! ;) But it is easier to work faster digitally; you can just open up Photoshop and get right to work. No setting up an easel or preparing your palette, etc.

I have relatives in rural New York, and I have been to Walden Pond, so I kinda pulled from both of those memories. Thank ya!

So tranquil and done so fast!
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 07:29 pm (UTC)
Well, it's easier to work fast when you're just slapping silhouettes down thar! I googled some pics of foggy lakes for reference and started slopping with the digital paint. My gramma used to have a big boulder by the pond on her property that we would sit on, so I pulled from that memory. :D

Oh wow! So beautiful and so very Sam. Makes me sigh at how gorgeous it is.
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 07:32 pm (UTC)
You are so very kind, lady. I'm sitting here--looking at the drawing I owe you, beside me on my easel--and feeling so much guilt, IT BURNS.

I have sworn to myself it is happening this month; I am catching up with my commissions. It's ridiculous and self-indulgent, not having finished them. I have no excuse but lack of willpower.

*HUGS YOU TO BITS*

Oh, WOW. That is gorgeous. I love the silhouettes of Sam and the heron and the hues of the water and the mist and just the feeling of utter peace it evokes.
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 07:33 pm (UTC)
And boy, do we need a little peace, huh? Thanks, lady! *fist bump*

Gorgeous.....perfect for the prompt and also for the writing it inspired. I love the sky and the shadows plus the fog over the water. Sighs deeply......

Fog on water is one of my very favorite things, not gonna lie. Thank you!

UGH THAT'S FUCKING GORGEOUS

I know I should be looking at Sam, but THAT HERON

(Psst, we're nearing the final draft now on the next FC chapter. Any interest in a preview to see if it sparks some inspiration for an artwork, or is your schedule too busy right now?)
The indefatigable Mrs. Griffinquickreaver on May 3rd, 2014 07:47 pm (UTC)
The heron was fun to paint, gotta admit! We have them here in Ohio too; they're awesome birds.

(AND YES YES YES, SPOIL ME ON FC!! I've been thinking of it, sketching some really sloppy ideas. You are not forgotten!)
